Lawmakers take up pronoun bill; supporters invoke case from Geary County

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would now prevent a 2022 court case where a Geary County teacher was punished for not complying with a policy requiring teachers to use the preferred names and pronouns of transgender students.

The bill, heard by the Senate Education Committee on Monday, would outlaw any school district or university employee from addressing a minor or student with a pronoun inconsistent with their biological sex without their parent's permission.

School employees also would be prohibited from using a name other than the one listed . . .
