KHP superintendent reports an upswing in recruiting classes

The Kansas Highway Patrol is seeing an upturn in recruiting with new classes of trooper candidates this year that will at least double the number of candidates who graduated from the academy a year ago.

KHP Superintendent Erik Smith told lawmakers Wednesday that the agency is on track to graduate 30 - maybe 32 - new troopers this year from the academy.

It would be an increase from 15 in 2022. There were just five graduates in 2021 and seven in 2020.
