(Updated to reflect that Schmidt and Francisco had been endorsed in the primary)
Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s PAC on Monday rolled out its endorsements for the Nov. 5 general election.
The Middle of the Road PAC had about $935,000 in cash on hand as of July 25 after spending about $243,000 leading up to the primary.
The endorsements in this story are only where there are contested election races involving major parties.
So just because your candidate is not on this list doesn’t mean they haven’t been endorsed by the governor’s PAC.
Overall, the governor endorsed 63 Democrats in contested House and Senate races on Nov. 5 as she seeks to break the supermajority in both chambers.
She endorsed in 47 contested races in the House and 16 in the Senate.
With some exceptions, the governor mostly endorsed in districts that she carried two years ago when she won a second term against Republican Derek Schmidt.
In the House, the governor endorsed a candidate against House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a district carried by Schmidt in 2022 and won by former President Donald Trump in 2020.
She also endorsed a candidate against Republican Brian Bergkamp in a district Schmidt carried with 61% of the vote in 2022.
She also endorsed Democratic candidates in two southeast Kansas House districts – Janie Jarrett of Baxter Springs in District 1 and Melesia Rhodes of Arma – that Schmidt overwhelmingly won two year ago.
But for the most part, Kelly’s PAC focused on districts where the governor won two years ago, although in some cases former President Trump won them four years ago.
She endorsed Democrat Pam Shernuk in a rematch against House Majority Leader Chris Croft in a district Kelly won in 2022 but Trump won two years earlier.
She threw her support to Senate candidates Andrew Mall and Karen Thurlow, who are arguably in two of the hottest Senate races in the state.
Mall is trying to upend Republican Sen. Mike Thompson of Shawnee, while Thurlow is trying to defeat Republican Sen. Kellie Warren of Leawood.
Trump barely lost both of those Senate districts in 2020.
The governor took a pass in one House district where Democrat Jacquie Lightcap of Topeka is taking on Republican Rep. Jesse Borjon of Topeka.
It’s a district Kelly won with 56% of the vote two years ago, but Trump won with 51% of the vote in 2020.
She also passed on backing a couple of moderate Republicans, including state Sen. Brenda Dietrich of Topeka in District 20 and state Rep. Mark Schreiber of Emporia in House District 60.
