Kelly says investigators examining grant program to assure compliance

Gov. Laura Kelly said Wednesday that independent investigators are examining a grant program that came under scrutiny when a former Commerce official who vanished and was later found dead made accusations about how the funds were awarded.

Talking to reporters Wednesday in Olathe after a ceremonial signing of the tax bill, Kelly said her administration is conducting an investigation to ensure that the so-called BASE grants - short for Building a Strong Economy - were awarded appropriately.

"In terms of the fidelity of the grants themselves, I think that was OK, but we want to make sure, and that's why . . .
