Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday nominated Shawnee County District Judge Rachel Pickering to fill a seat on the Kansas Court of Appeals, potentially making her the first Hispanic to sit on the appellate court.
It would be the second groundbreaking court appointment for Kelly, who also appointed the first woman of color to the appeals court last year.
If confirmed, Pickering would be Kelly's sixth appointment to the appeals court - all women.
