Kansas faces shortage of snow plow drivers

As winter approaches, the state Transportation Department is about 30% below what it will take to have a fully staffed crew of snow plow drivers, leading to concerns about how quickly roads will get cleared.

The state highway department is 344 drivers short of being able to fully staff 591 trucks for two 12-hour shifts that would be required during a statewide storm, with some areas of the state facing worse shortages than others.

"We will do our best this year, but if we have huge storms, it may takes us a little while longer to get our highways . . .
