Republican state Rep. Steven Johnson's lead in the Republican primary for Kansas treasurer was cut by more than half as election officials on Wednesday continued tallying votes.

As of 5:30 p.m. Johnson led state Sen. Caryn Tyson by 307 votes, or 214,323 to 213,927. Both candidates were basically locked at 50%.

Johnson led Tyson by 778 votes when officials stopped counting ballots early Wednesday morning.

The race is far from decided since there are about 27,000 mail ballots that have not been returned and thousands of provisional ballots that need to be counted.
