Johnson County Republicans have elected a new chairman who is seen as a conservative willing to reach out to the moderate wing of the party.
Fabian Shepard, a last-minute entry into the race, defeated former Kansas House candidate Sue Huff 135-131.
Shepard, who immigrated to the United States from Panama in 1977 after living under the rule of dictator Brig. Gen. Omar Torrijos Herrera, replaces Dave Myres.
Huff brought a slate of candidates to the race that included Matt Bingesser as vice chair, Stephanie James as secretary and Dustin Morris as treasurer.
