Republican precinct leaders on Wednesday night picked Finney County Commissioner Bill Clifford to replace the late state Rep. Russ Jennings in the Legislature.
Clifford, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress last year, defeated a field of three other candidates to serve out Jennings' term in the 122nd House District.
Clifford won on the first ballot, receiving 32 votes to 14 for fellow Finney County Commissioner Lon Pishny, seven for Lakin attorney Kenny Estes and three for Lakin Cemetery Sexton Dan Patterson.
"It's bittersweet in many ways," Clifford said of his election.
