Insurance Department announces new staff roles

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt on Friday named a new assistant insurance commissioner to replace Barb Rankin.

Schmidt appointed Clay Johnson, now the agency's assistant general counsel, as the new assistant commissioner.

He started with the Department of Insurance as a staff attorney in 2016.

In 2019, he became the chief regulatory counsel and later became the assistant general counsel for Insurance Department's legal division in 2020.

“Clay is a bright legal mind,” Schmidt said in a statement.

“But it was his work ethic and sensible approach to regulation that made him a natural fit for this new . . .
