House Districts: Where the abortion amendment won and lost

0
1356

As Kansas House Democratic candidates campaign this cycle, some of them are focusing their efforts – at least in part – on how the abortion amendment fared in their districts.

Working with Wichita State political scientist Brian Amos, we crunched the data for each of the 125 House districts and how the amendment did.

Now, it’s a debatable proposition about whether a vote on an issue translates into a vote for or against a candidate.

There’s a lot that goes into deciding a vote for a candidate, whether it’s education, transportation or social services.

We covered that in this story. It’s worth a read.

But we thought we would give you some context about how the amendment did in each House district so you can track just how well candidates do in districts where the amendment won and lost.

In short, the amendment won in 35 districts and lost in 90.

The amendment was defeated in one House District – District 46 represented by Boog Highberger of Lawrence – with 93% of the vote.

It was defeated in eight House districts with between 80% and 89% of the vote.

It was defeated in 18 House districts with between 70% and 79% of the vote.

It was defeated in 33 House districts with between 60% and 69% of the vote.

The amendment prevailed in one House district with more than 70% of the vote, and that would be District 118 represented by Rep. Jim Minnix of Scott City.

It won in another 11 districts with 60% to 69% of the vote.

Here’s how it broke down by each district. In cases where the numbers don’t add up exactly to 100%, please attribute to rounding up.
