The House budget-writing committee is paring back Gov. Laura Kelly's education spending proposals, including money for special education and school meals for less-affluent students.
The House Appropriations Committee on Monday tentatively approved a $6.6 billion budget for Kansas public schools in 2026 that includes $30 million for special education but not at the level the governor proposed.
The budget also didn't include money to cover copayments for at-risk students to get free breakfast and lunches and $500,000 to cover the expense of certain Advanced Placement test fees for low-income students.
