Governor names former leading lawmaker to chair Children’s Cabinet

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly on Tuesday named former House Majority Leader Don Hineman to chair the Kansas Children's Cabinet.

Hineman, who served 12 years in the Legislature before retiring in 2020, will replace Kim Moore.

Hineman will chair the nine-member board that was created in 1999 to oversee the expenditures from the tobacco master settlement agreement, which mostly goes to improving the health and wellbeing of children.

The Children's Cabinet administers the Children's Initiatives Fund, which averages about $55 million a year.
