A former Republican House member is challenging Republican state Sen. Brenda Dietrich of Topeka in this summer's GOP primary.

Josh Powell, who served in the Kansas House in 2013-14, has filed to run against Dietrich in Senate District 20.

Powell left office after he was defeated by former Republican state Rep. Fred Patton in the 2014 Republican primary by 62 votes.

Dietrich, the former superintendent of the Auburn-Washburn School District in Topeka, is concluding her first term in the Kansas Senate.

Dietrich also served two terms in the Kansas House before running for the Senate.
