Emporia basketball standout challenging Hoye

A former basketball star at Emporia State University has filed to run as a Republican for the House District 17 seat represented by Democrat Jo Ella Hoye.

Emily Carpenter, who ran unsuccessfully for the De Soto School Board last year, is seeking the Johnson County seat that Hoye has represented since 2021.

Also filing was Republican Max Langston, who could not be reached for comment Monday.

Carpenter has questioned mask mandates in schools and has urged school officials to make them optional.
