Education choice group can’t provide free travel to lawmakers, ethics opinion says

A nonprofit group that advocates for school choice would not be allowed to provide free travel and lodging to state legislators under a new advisory opinion issued by the state ethics commission.

The panel approved a new opinion that says Indianapolis-based EdChoice is not exempted from a state law that generally prohibits gifts to lawmakers unless they fit into an exception spelled out in the law.

The opinion also said EdChoice would be required to register as a lobbyist if it spends at least $1,000 . . .
