Democratic Party fundraising surges in JoCo, tops state

There was a time when Johnson County Democrats raised money in the shadow of the Republican machine.

A decade ago, at the advent of Gov. Sam Brownback's administration and the rise of the tea party, Democrats scrapped up what they could.

The year Brownback was elected governor, in 2010, Johnson County Democrats raised about $11,000. The county Republican Party? A little more than $100,000.
