Chief justice asks budget panel to spare judiciary from budget cuts

Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert asked Senate budget writers on Monday to spare the courts from a 1.5% across-the-board budget cut for most state agencies.

Luckert told the Senate Ways & Means Committee that the across-the-board cut would cost the courts $3.3 million in fiscal year 2026.

"That will have a significant impact on the operations of every courthouse across the state," Luckert told lawmakers in a personal appearance before the committee.

She also asked for the committee to restore another $500,000 that the House added to the budget to help . . .
