Burris gives up judgeship

Outgoing state Rep. Jesse Burris of Mulvane has decided not to take a seat as a Sedgwick County magistrate judge, which he was elected to last fall.

Burris notified Gov. Laura Kelly's office of his decision in a letter dated Wednesday. The governor will get to appoint a replacement.

"After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to respectfully decline to take the office of magistrate judge of the 18th Judicial District County," Burris said in his letter.

"I have decided to take another position that is more closely aligned with my talents and career goals," he wrote.
