Former state treasurer and House Speaker Tim Shallenburger is returning to state politics after Republican precinct leaders elected him to the state Senate on Sunday.
Shallenburger was elected to serve out the term of former state Sen. Richard Hilderbrand in Senate District 13, who resigned Jan. 8 for personal reasons.
Shallenburger defeated Dan Muter 87-42 to win a seat in the state Senate.
The Senate district covers all or parts of Crawford, Cherokee, Bourbon and Labette counties.
Those boundaries will change in 2024 when the new Senate districts take effect after election boundaries were redrawn last year.
