Fred Sherman has suddenly resigned as Johnson County election commissioner after almost five years overseeing elections in the state's most populous county.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab announced Sherman's resignation Thursday morning. He didn't provide a reason for why Sherman stepped aside.

“I thank Fred for his service to the people of Johnson County,” Schwab said. “I appreciate his commitment to administering elections that are safe, secure, and transparent.”
