Audit: Kansas didn’t ensure equal access to behavioral health treatment in KanCare program

A new federal audit criticizes the state's efforts to ensure that companies administering the state's Medicaid program complied with a law requiring them to provide equal coverage for treating mental illness and addiction as they do for medical treatments.

The inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services released an audit last week questioning whether the state did enough to ensure that access to mental health and substance abuse services would be on par with access to medical and surgical care.
