Secretary of state supports citizenship designation on driver’s licenses

Secretary of State Scott Schwab is backing a bill that would require Kansas driver's licenses to show citizenship status during a hearing that boiled over in a tart disagreement about committee decorum.

Speaking on behalf of the secretary of state's office, general counsel Clay Barker expressed support for the bill introduced by the chair of the House elections committee.

"This would provide an extra layer of protection to ensure that noncitizens don't vote in our elections, either by mistake or intentionally," Barker told the House Judiciary Committee . . .
