Attorney general casts doubt about legality of school budget veto

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach says Gov. Laura Kelly was out of bounds when she vetoed a part of the state budget allocating $5 million for school grants to equip buildings with surveillance cameras with artificial intelligence that can locate people carrying guns.

The governor drew complaints from lawmakers last year when she retained the $5 million for school security grants in the budget but vetoed language directing how the money would be used for the surveillance cameras.
