Shallenburger running to fill state Senate seat

Former state treasurer and House Speaker Tim Shallenburger is running to fill the state Senate seat that will be vacated by outgoing Republican Sen. Richard Hilderbrand of Baxter Springs.

Shallenburger said Thursday that he planned to run in the precinct election for the seat that represents the southeast corner of Kansas, including parts or all of Bourbon, Crawford and Cherokee counties.

Hilderbrand is resigning Jan. 8, but the precinct committee election must be held 21 days from when he submitted his resignation on Tuesday.
