Republican state Sen. Molly Baumgardner, chair of the Senate Education Committee, withdrew from running for reelection this year.
Baumgardner of Louisburg withdrew her filing for Senate District 37 as the noon deadline for candidates to file for office approached Monday.
Republican Doug Shane has filed to run for the seat with Baumgardner's decision to withdraw. He could not be reached for comment.
Democrat Sherry Giebler, a licensed professional counselor and community volunteer, also has filed for the seat.
