The Kansas Republican and Democratic parties are now set to hold presidential primaries funded by the state after the deadline for opting out lapsed on Friday.

Authorized by the Legislature last session, the primaries are set for next March 19. They will cost an estimated $4.7 million. The parties had until Dec. 1 to opt out.

This is a one-time presidential preference primary funded by the state.

Any future presidential preference primaries funded by the state would need to be approved by the Legislature.
