Republican, Democratic strategists offer lookback on governor’s race


Former Gov. Sam Brownback's record proved to be a troubling issue for Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt to overcome in his loss to Democratic incumbent Laura Kelly in the 2022 governor's race.

The Brownback era reemerged Tuesday in a forum at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas that featured the top Republican and Democratic strategists in the campaign for governor.

The Democratic operatives - Shelbi Dantic for Kelly and Evan Gates from the Kansas Values Institute - didn't apologize for tying Brownback to Schmidt as much as Schmidt's campaign manager, C.J . . .
