Democratic state Rep. Silas Miller of Wichita on Thursday night won a seat in the Kansas Senate to replace Democrat Mary Ware, who resigned last month.
Democratic precinct leaders chose Miller for the Senate District 25 seat over former lobbyist Tom Witt, a longtime advocate for the LGBTQ community.
Miller defeated Witt 17-5, party officials said.
Miller's election leaves an opening for the House District 86 seat that will now need to be filled before the next legislative session.
