Legislature puts check on governor’s emergency powers

The Kansas Legislature will assume oversight of the governor's use of emergency powers responding to the coronavirus.

The Legislature approved a resolution that will allow it to review the governor's use of emergency powers every 30 days to ensure they're not abused.

The resolution passed unanimously in both chambers before lawmakers adjourned their regular session on Thursday.

Oversight would largely be carried out by the Legislative Coordinating Council, which is made up of the Republican and Democratic leaders from both chambers.
