Lawmakers create new committee to craft budget

Leading lawmakers on Wednesday created a special new committee that will prepare a budget ahead of the upcoming legislative session as part of a changeover in how the state's budget process plays out.

The Legislative Coordinating Council voted to create a 23-member committee that will meet for five days and be made up of eight House Republicans, eight Senate Republicans, four House Democrats and three Senate Democrats.

The party composition of the committee is proportional to the representation in the Legislature, officials said.
