Hawkins announces for insurance commissioner; incumbent considers governor’s race

Touting himself as "pro-life, pro-gun and pro-Trump," House Speaker Dan Hawkins did Tuesday what many had expected him to do.

He announced that he was running for state insurance commissioner.

What's still not known, however, is whether Republican incumbent Vicki Schmidt will run for reelection to her current post, plunge into the governor' race or just bow out of politics.

"My goals for the Insurance Department are simple: create a competitive insurance
environment in our state that will lower costs for everyone and ensure that insurance issues are easy to navigate for everyday Kansans," Hawkins said . . .
