In a rare move that departs from tradition, Democratic state Rep. Boog Highberger of Lawrence is planning to mount a run for House speaker from the minority party.

Highberger has sent an email to the Democratic caucus seeking their nomination for House speaker when they convene for Monday's leadership elections.

While state law allows each party to nominate someone for House speaker, there has been an informal agreement in years past for the minority party to stay out of races for speaker.
