Republican state Sen. J.R. Claeys is joining Attorney General-elect Kris Kobach's team as a senior adviser while remaining in the Senate.

Kobach confirmed Claeys' hiring Friday although it raised questions from the Senate's top Democrat about whether he could serve in the executive branch and the legislative branch at the same time.

Claeys, a former House member who was elected to the Senate in 2020, had worked as a campaign consultant for Kobach during his campaign for attorney general. Claeys worked as a consultant for Kansas City-based Axiom Strategies.
