Cities say bill limiting property tax breaks puts them in dilemma

Local governments say a new bill will put them in the untenable position of choosing between raising property taxes to fund local services or giving tax breaks to bring new developments into their community.

The bill, developed by Republican state Rep. Sean Tarwater and state Sen. Caryn Tyson, would keep local governments from raising their property tax rates if they give tax incentives to induce economic development.

"We all know property taxes is the No. 1 issue when we knock on doors and go to coffees and town halls. It's always property taxes," Tarwater told the Senate tax committee . . .
