State auditors on Tuesday reminded lawmakers about the price tag of a state tax credit that was created to foster the construction of affordable housing, saying it could now cost the state potentially $1 billion in the next decade or so.

Auditors have been warning lawmakers since late 2023 about the potential cost of the program, which was enacted in 2022 and allows investors to use the full amount of their tax credit every year for 10 years.
