KDOT sees fierce competition for transportation funds

Cities and counties are seeking nearly five times more money than what's available from a new state transportation program to fund projects that might not get done without state aid.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reported receiving $245 million in requests for a slice of $50 million approved by the Legislature last session. A portion of the new money comes from state revenues that exceeded estimates.

"We don't want to use these state funds just to supplant local money," said Lindsey Douglas, deputy transportation secretary. "We want to accomplish more with this money than what could have been . . .
