Republican Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt on Monday became the second major candidate to announce a running mate, picking Kansas Farm Bureau President Joe Newland as her choice for lieutenant governor.
"There is not a more trusted leader in rural Kansas than Joe Newland,” Schmidt said in a statement.
“He understands the challenges Kansans face every day - tirelessly fighting to protect our land, water and way of life,” Schmidt said.
If elected, Newland will serve as lieutenant governor and agriculture secretary. Newland will step down from his post at Kansas Farm Bureau on June 1 when Schmidt officially files to run . . .
