Gov. Laura Kelly on Monday squelched efforts by the Legislature to keep local property taxes in check, vetoing a bill she said offered false promises of reducing local taxes the state doesn't control.
Kelly said the Legislature controls the 20-mill property tax levy for schools, but added that all other property taxes are levied at the local level.
"I don’t dispute that property taxes in Kansas are too high," Kelly said in a statement.
