Former Wichita lawmaker passes away at 69

Melody McCray-Miller, who represented Wichita in the Kansas House from 2005 to 2013 and was the first Black woman elected to the Sedgwick County Commission, has died.

She was 69.

Her death was announced Sunday by Wichita Public Schools where she was an at-large member. Her death also was announced by Sedgwick County government.

"As the at-large board member, she brought a districtwide perspective grounded in care, integrity, and a genuine belief in the potential of every student," the school district said.
