KBI seeks budget increase to battle fentanyl, children’s internet crimes, open new regional center

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is seeking a more than 25% budget increase to battle fentanyl, combat internet crimes against children, build a new regional crime center and offer pay raises to recruit and retain agents and scientists.

KBI Director Tony Mattivi late Tuesday presented his agency's $62.7 million budget request for fiscal year 2025, which would be a $13.8 million increase in all funds from the current budget estimates for the current fiscal year.

Most of the increase is attributable to nearly $17 million in budget enhancements for tackling fentanyl, increasing pay for agents and scientists . . .
