Gov. Laura Kelly's office on Monday morning announced 11 applicants for a seat on the state appeals court that came open with Judge Tony Powell's retirement on June 30.

Kelly has already named five of the 14 members of the Court of Appeals during her term.

All of Kelly’s appointments to the appeals court have been women.

Kelly uses a screening committee made up of five lawyers and four nonlawyers to help choose a nominee. The process is open to the public.

The governor is not obligated under state law to use a nominating committee.
