Former Kansas State Board of Education President Janet Waugh, the longest serving member in board history who regarded teachers as "heroes" and was remembered as an ardent advocate for students, has passed away.
Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson on Saturday confirmed her passing. Watson said he learned of her death on Saturday morning.
"Janet was the longest serving State Board member in its history and was a passionate advocate for children, especially children who resided in poverty," he said in a text.
"We will miss her voice on all education issues, but are very grateful for her years of tireless . . .
