Republican state treasurer candidate Steven Johnson pushed out a new ad this week as part of a nearly $300,000 broadcast campaign in the Republican primary for treasurer.

It’s another light-hearted approach for Johnson, who is known for his button-down and business approach as a lawmaker.

It’s a variation of a recent ad where he portrayed himself as a “taxpayer ninja” with explosions as a backdrop.

Johnson has spent or booked about $297,000 in broadcast ads, with $122,000 going to Wichita, $121,000 going to Kansas City, $53,000 going to Topeka and about $500 going to the Joplin market in southeast Kansas.

Johnson ad

The national ad tracking firm AdImpact shows that Johnson’s Republican rival, state Sen. Caryn Tyson of Parker, has spent or booked about $5,000 on radio.

Tyson has been running a campaign that has focused on Johnson’s votes to raise taxes, voting against legislation that would have repealed in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants and an amendment to a bill requiring permits for concealed carry on college campuses.

Tyson just gained an endorsement from former Republican National Committeewoman Helen Van Etten.

“I’ve have known Senator Caryn Tyson for almost 20 years. She is a conservative voice in the Kansas Legislature and will be a great state treasurer,” Van Etten said in a statement.

“Caryn Tyson is the only conservative running, and she has my full endorsement to be our next Kansas state treasurer, ” she said.
